Our Story

According to family lore, the Cox family has been in the automobile business since the early 1900s. During the teens and twenties, they operated a Ford franchise in Ocilla, Georgia. During the boom years of the Roaring Twenties, they moved to Avon Park, Florida where they operated a Dodge dealership. Cox Chevrolet has a long and interesting history.

Our Chevrolet dealership began in 1926 as two separate dealerships; one was located in Ocilla, Georgia and run by Mr. J.P. Cox, the other dealership was in Tifton, Georgia run by Mr. J.O. Cox, Sr. In 1932 both dealerships were sold and the father and son joined together to form one dealership in Bradenton, Florida. At that time, Mr. J.P. Cox was the dealer. In 1938 Mr. J.P. Cox passed away and his son, Mr. J.O. Cox, Sr. became the dealer. When Mr. J.O. Cox, Jr. returned from military service in 1945, he became the dealer.

Cox Chevrolet has continued to grow over the years, and in 1978, the existing facility on Cortez Road was opened to meet the company’s and customer’s expanding needs. Despite growth and expansion, one piece has remained constant: the Cox family name. J.O. Cox Jr.’s sons Steve Cox and Gary R. Cox took over operations around 1986, but the reins have now been handed down to their children, the 5th generation in the business. Kelly Cox, Kyle Cox, Jen Cox-Lipsey, and Jay Cox now run the Cox dealerships as partial owners, with Kris Cox serving as President and CEO and Tammy Cox-Leavell as Vice President and CFO. Of course, Steve and Gary Cox haven’t yet made their exits at the company and continue to assist wherever needed.

100 Years Of Cox

Cox Chevrolet celebrates a 100-year milestone in 2026. That's 100 years of service, stewardship, and commitment to our Sarasota family and community since our founding in 1926. That's a long time!

To what do we attribute our longevity and success? Our family values, community involvement, and customer relationships. Learn more about each of these strengths below, then contact us online or give us a call at (941) 251-0310 to talk to our team and experience them for yourself.

Family Values

Ever since Mr. J.P. Cox started our Chevrolet dealership in 1926, our family has been focused on working together and understanding each other's strengths and weaknesses to deliver a quality car-buying experience to everyone in the Tampa area. We also ensure that no employees receive special treatment just because they're family: everyone earns their roles by doing everything from changing oil to working the front desk.

Customer Relationships

Because of our absolute commitment to the quality of our service, we have served multiple generations of the same Bradenton families over the decades. Some of our customers stop by just to spend time in our showroom and chat!

We're able to foster these relationships through our five-generation-spanning family ownership model. This generation also includes the first women in the Cox family business—though they'll be far from the last.

Community Involvement

We're also active in the community, through financial donations, hands-on support, and generosity. Cox Chevrolet is deeply involved in local organizations, schools, and churches, and we're proud to support local charities, kids' leagues, and law enforcement.

Cox Chevrolet is often recommended to new residents for vehicle sales and service because we're trusted throughout the Palmetto area to serve customers during positive moments, like buying a new car, and challenging ones, such as vehicle repairs.

Enduring Culture: The Next 100 Years

Over the past 100 years, the Cox family has stayed true to our principles thanks to our values and commitment to our community. We're proud to be your Chevy dealership, and we look forward to serving you, your children, and your grandchildren over the next century. Here's the next 100 years of Cox Chevrolet!
